What is Students Offering Support

Students Offering Support is a national network of student volunteers working together to raise funds to raise the quality of education and life for those in developing nations through raising marks of our fellow University students.

This is accomplished through our Exam-AID initiative where student volunteers run group review sessions prior to a midterm or final exam for a $20 donation.

All of the money raised through SOS Exam-AIDs is funnelled directly into sustainable educational projects in developing nations. Not only does SOS fund these projects, but SOS volunteers help build the projects on annual volunteer trips coordinated by each University chapter.

Students Offering Support - History:

Students Offering Support started in 2004, as a student association at Wilfrid Laurier University. The SOS initiative has been consistently growing for the past 6 years, having tutored over 7,000 students and raised over $340,000 for communities in need in Latin America. (See 'Students Offering Support' Fan page on Facebook or http://studentsofferingsupport.ca/aboutus.php?section=OurHistory).

Waterloo SOS was founded in 2008.  In our first year of operations, we raised over $6,000, primarily through Exam-AIDs within the math faculty.  In August 2009, we ran a successful volunteer trip to El Salvador to build a school along with York SOS.  The 2009-10 school year saw exponential growth for our chapter.  To date, we have raised over $40,000 and tutored over 1,800 students in 31 courses.  We will be sending 22 volunteers to Cusco, Peru for an ambitious building project in a Peruvian community in August!

In Fall 2010, we will continue to expand in the science and engineering faculties and hopefully raise even more money!
